Who we are?
The Convention for Biomedical Research Ghana (CoBReG) is a Non Governmental Organization (NGO) active in Ghana; in close partnership with the Ghana Biomedical Research Network (GBRN), its fund raising affiliate in North America. We are a group of biomedical scientists, clinicians, bio-engineers, laboratory technicians, public health specialists, and others committed to advancing bio-medicine and promoting health in Ghana, the West Africa sub-region, and the continent at large. What do we do? We sponsor and promote a range of capacity building and educational activities (KG to tertiary) designed to link Ghanaian professionals with the African Diaspora for mutual benefit and national development. We provide a forum for identifying and discussing scientific and public health priorities in order to maximize the benefits of the global biomedical revolution within the local context. We want to enable you to have greater impact and professional success
Mission
To serve and advance biomedical research and education to the scientific community in Ghana. Strategic Vision: CoBReG is dedicated to scientific capacity-building in Ghana, West Africa, and the continent at large. While our primary focus is on the biomedical sciences, in today’s world the physical and social sciences, engineering, and mathematics are all making significant contributions to global health. We are committed to their strengthening, as well. Strategic Goals: Promoting research for improved health and economic development Fostering interaction and collaboration among biomedical professionals Creating opportunities world-wide for training, mentoring, and other activities that build local capacity and produce a cadre of world-class scientists Current Initiatives: National and International Advocacy Training and Mentoring Capacity Development for Science Community and School Outreach
Training and Mentorship
Local capacity to drive scientific and technical innovation is limited due to a lack of resources and “brain drain”. CoBReG seeks to fill gaps by linking the Diaspora and others with locals. These interactions enhance professional development, as well as create new research opportunities in Ghana for all involved. An annual meeting in August provides a forum for the presentation of research and frank exchange of experiences and ideas. Fostering creative research driven by important local needs with local leadership is our goal. Our targets include: Expanding CoBReG’s membership and scope Offering workshops and faculty development programmes, including technical and scientific entrepreneurship Establishing global collaborations that bring capacity to Ghana To learn more or to get involved, please reach out to us!
National and International Advocacy
CoBReG is actively seeking support for growing the research backbone that sustains the local scientific community. We are advocating world-wide for the creation of sustainable funding mechanisms for Ghana. The national government, as well as international bodies, need to be aware that harnessing scientific developments will benefit all Africans not only in terms of better services and products, but also with job creation at all skill levels. Our targets include: Establishing and promoting reliable, targeted, and flexible funding mechanisms Partnering with other organizations sharing the CoBReG vision for capacity building To learn more or to get involved, please reach out to us.
